Official WK4P September VHF Contest Site
A very special THANK YOU to all who worked us during the 2008 September ARRL VHF Contest from Whitetop Mountain Virginia!
Thanks for visiting the WK4P Whitetop Expedition website. For the 2008 ARRL September VHF Contest we have assembled some of the top contesters in North Carolina's High Country to make the trip across the state line and ascend Virginia's 2nd highest peak and highest road to take part in the contest. From a ground elevation of 5482 feet we will be the highest amateur contest operation in the state. We will assemble a 4 band limited multioperator effort covering the 50, 144, 222, and 432 mhz amateur bands. This is a huge undertaking, we will actually have more antennas in the air than our 3A Field Day operation.
From Whitetop we expect to cover all or parts of eight states on groundwave alone: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. Florida, Maryland, and Pennsylvania are not out of the question. We are also looking for some longer distance sporadic E (Es) openings as well as tropo or meteor scatter, all are possible in September. In past years we have had stations tell us we were the most distant contact they have ever made on simplex. That is a cool feeling on the part of our operators.
We will be working CW, SSB and FM on all four bands. We should have pretty good ears in our low noise enviroment from atop the Jefferson National Forest so if you hear us please give us a call. In the past we have worked stations over 60 miles away who were using a handheld and rubber duckie. It always amazes me what one can hear on VHF and UHF from 5500 feet.
Most of all we need your contact on as many bands as possible. If all you have is a two meter FM rig please listen for and call us. If you have a dualbander we need to work you on both 144 and 440. If you can work us on all four bands that would be wonderful as well. If you're new to amateur radio or a seasoned veteran, we want working WK4P from Whitetop Mountain to be a special experience.
Thanks for taking the time to visit our site. Take a moment to look around, see what equipment we are taking to the mountain, and learn a bit more about our team and this famed mountain. We look forward to hearing you in September.
